The Kern County District Attorney’s Office has a Victim Services Unit that is dedicated to ensuring the rights of crime victims are enforced and that victims have a meaningful voice throughout the criminal justice process.

The unit has advocates who are trained to assist victims and their families cope with the traumatic effects of crime. As a member of the prosecution team, advocates can provide information on criminal cases after victims have reported to law enforcement and support for those who need to report a crime. Collaboration with other community agencies ensure that additional needs and services are available.

Advocates are also qualified to assist victims of violent crime apply for the California Victim Compensation Program which may be able to assist with the reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses related to the crime, excluding property loss.

Victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, or sexual assault will be assisted at the Kern County Family Justice Center.

Services

Advocates can assist with:

  • Applying for the State of California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB) for reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses related to a crime (excluding property)
  • Crisis intervention
  • Law enforcement and prosecution interview support
  • Notification of inmate release
  • Orientation to the Criminal Justice System
  • Property return
  • Providing court support
  • Providing on-going case status of a criminal matter

CalVCB reimburses for the following expenses:

    • Crime scene clean-up
    • Funeral and burial
    • Home or vehicle modifications for a victim left permanently disabled
    • Home security installation or improvement
    • Income loss
      • If you were disabled due to a crime
      • If you were a victim of human trafficking
      • If you are a parent or legal guardian of a minor victim who is hospitalized or dies
    • Job retraining
    • Medical and dental treatment
    • Mental health treatment or counseling
      • Including minors who were witnesses to a violent crime
    • Relocation
    • Round trip mileage costs to medical, dental, or mental health appointments
    • Support loss for dependents of a victim who is injured or dies
    • Vet fees or replacement cost for a guide, signal or service dog
